The Global Peace Index, released by the US Department of State termed India as one of the worlds most unstable countries in the world today. Indian arch enemy Pakistan, has been ranked forth most unstable nations, just ahead of Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan and Sudan.
India has been ranked 128th out of total 149 countries, and with issue like Kashmir, Pakistan, North East, Naxalites, LTTE (down south), I guess this position from global perspective is quite justified.
Iceland is the world most peaceful nation, while other nations like United States have been ranked (97), Pakistan(145) Nepal (80) (surprisingly higher than India), Our buddies Israel(136), Iran(105), and our old strategic partners Russia has been placed 131).
Kashmir separatist movement has been going on for over 20 years, and still unresolved, North East around 40 years, while naxalism has not only dented Indian reputation, but also demonstrated to the world that India is far away from being a stable regional power(forget about being a world power).
The question is why is India unable to resolve it’s problems? Why does India have problem with almost all it’s neighbours i.e. Nepal(has developed strong anti Indian feeling, and seen as pro China now ), Sri Lanka (traditional ally of Pakistan, and received support in 1971 war), Bangladesh (did not take them too long to become anti India), China (a high tension relationship )and lastly Pakistan(still there is no sign of peace, despite cultural and linguistic similarities).
Is India still following Russian / Soviet footsteps (as Russia is seen as a bully in CIS states, and treats it’s little neighbours with belligerence, with a colonial hangover? It’s time for Indian think tanks to re-analyse their South Asian policy, if they have are to achieve their ambition of being a global power.
This starts with being a stable country first, a stable regional power second, and then we can think of being a global power
